{"id":1437,"date":"2026-06-23T09:29:26","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T09:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.discoverscilla.com\/?page_id=1437"},"modified":"2026-08-19T08:49:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T08:49:35","slug":"grotte-di-tremusa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverscilla.com\/en\/grotte-di-tremusa\/","title":{"rendered":"Tremusa Caves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container has-pattern-background has-mask-background nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1331.2px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p class=\"translation-block\">The Tremusa caves, immersed among majestic chestnut forests and breathtaking landscapes, represent an\nevocative geological testimony dating back millions of years.<br>\nSeveral trails cross the surrounding area and converge with routes of great naturalistic value, starting from\nScilla, Melia and Favazzina.<br>\nA certain mystery still surrounds the caves: according to one tradition, the very name \u201cTremusa\u201d would derive\nfrom \u201cThree Muses\u201d, owing to the supposed presence, inside the largest cavity, of three statues depicting female\nfigures, later stolen during raids.<br>\nAccording to another legend, pagan religious rites were once performed here: nymphs welcomed virgin maidens\nto celebrate, with music and dancing, the last night before marriage.<br>\nIt is also said that, in the depths of the caves, there lies the entrance to a secret passage, an underground corridor\nthat over the centuries would have led all the way to the Castle of Scilla: a tale suspended between myth\nand memory.<br>\nWhatever the truth may be, it is certain that these cavities still preserve an atmosphere charged with mystery.<br>\nSituated about 530 meters above sea level, amid luxuriant vegetation, the caves represent a remnant of the\nancient Pleistocene sea, when 5,000 years ago these mountains were submerged beneath the sea.<br>\nThey were formed by the mechanical action of water which, by eroding the less resistant rock layers, created\nthe large and small cavities that today constitute the caves themselves.<br>\nThe caves are still active today: inside them it is possible to observe drops of water that slowly contribute to the\ngrowth of existing stalactites and stalagmites.\nAmong stalactites, stalagmites, columns and calcite formations that seem sculpted by a master of Gothic art,\nimmersing oneself in the atmosphere of these places becomes a surprising experience.\nThe cavities were fully explored for the first time in 1984 by the speleologists of the Bologna Speleological\nGroup of the CAI and the Bologna Speleological Union.<br>\nSubsequently, many others have visited the cave, driven by curiosity and scientific interest.\nThe entrance, located on a rocky wall about six meters high and partly concealed by vegetation, has a semicircular\nshape, with a series of closely spaced openings that provide access to the innermost underground sectors.<br>\nSpecifically, the cave is composed of two distinct sections: one on the left, where it is initially possible to proceed\nin an upright position, and one on the right side of the semicircle, where movement is immediately constrained\nby the narrowness of the environment.<br>\nThe interior scenery is particularly evocative: looking up toward the vault, one notices a marked fringe of squat\nstalactites;
