Today his fairy tales are considered an integral part of the collective consciousness and constitute an important part of the cultural heritage of children throughout the world.<br \/>\nEager to see the world and to go beyond the narrow confines of Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen succeeded in fulfilling his dream during the 1830s: to travel.<br \/>\nBetween 1840 and 1841, at the age of thirty-five, supported by a scholarship, he finally managed to reach Southern Italy.<br \/>\nThis same period of travel coincided with the most prolific phase of his fairy-tale production, with the publication of masterpieces that enchanted, and continue to enchant, generations of children and adults alike.<br \/>\nSome of his most celebrated fairy tales \u2013 The Little Mermaid, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and The Wild Swans \u2013 had only recently been published, and Andersen granted himself a long pause in search of new inspiration in the magical and evocative world of the Bel Paese.<br \/>\nThe long-awaited journey represented for Andersen an opportunity to provide new material for his poetic workshop. As in the tradition of the Grand Tour, the celebrated storyteller wrote and sketched, took notes and drafted impressions, forming, almost without realizing it, a kaleidoscope of inexhaustible inspirations.<br \/>\nThe impressions gathered during this journey would become the literary material for A Poet\u2019s Bazaar (En digters bazar), published in 1842, a work that presents the diary of the journey undertaken by the great Danish writer through Italy.<br \/>\nIt is here that Andersen casts upon our country the gaze that most characterizes him: melancholic and capable of reading life as an extraordinary adventure, always permeated by a subtle nostalgia.<br \/>\nProfound reflections alternate with barely sketched drawings, yet remarkably eloquent, in an itinerary that descends from the Alps to Naples, before crossing the sea toward Sicily.<br \/>\nIt is within this context that the passage dedicated to Scilla is situated, which Andersen reached by ship from Naples, and where the writer\u2019s gaze becomes even more intimate and involved, presenting the place as a symbolic threshold between myth, nature, and memory.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur ship glided past the swirling Charybdis, and we hardly noticed it! But what had become of the wild Maelstrom? They pointed out to us a stretch of sea very close to where we had passed, yet we could discern no particular movement of the waves.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And where is Scylla? \u2018Oh yes, she is still alive!\u2019 and they pointed out to us on the steep Calabrian coast a projecting rock with, above it, the gloomy ruins of a settlement; against it great breakers roared while the sea itself was fairly calm. Where the waves broke, blocks of grey-black rock emerged from the sea: they were Scylla\u2019s howling dogs; when there is a storm, they can perhaps be heard as far as the sandy isthmus of Messina.
